What to do after an Uber or Lyft accident

Being in a crash in someone else's car is disorienting, you weren't even driving, and now you're not sure who to call. Here's a simple checklist. The good news: rideshare companies carry serious insurance for passengers, and figuring out the rest is our job, not yours.

At the scene

  1. 1

Call 911 and get checked out by paramedics, even if you feel fine.

  2. 2

Screenshot your Uber or Lyft trip in the app right away, driver name, time, and route. This proves you were a passenger.

  3. 3

Photograph the inside and outside of the car and any other vehicles involved.

  4. 4

Get the driver's full name and license plate.

  5. 5

Report the crash inside the Uber or Lyft app.

In the first days

  1. 1

See a doctor within 24–48 hours and keep all records.

  2. 2

Don't accept any settlement or give a recorded statement before talking to a lawyer.

  3. 3

Write down what you remember about the crash while it's fresh.

Common questions

What should I do first after an Uber or Lyft accident?+

The first thing to do after an Uber or Lyft accident is get medical care and screenshot your trip in the app. The app screenshot, showing the driver, time, and route, proves you were a passenger during an active ride, which is what triggers the rideshare company's insurance coverage. Then photograph the scene and report the crash in the app.

Who pays if I'm hurt as an Uber or Lyft passenger?+

If you're hurt as an Uber or Lyft passenger, the rideshare company's insurance usually pays, because the app was on and a passenger was in the car. Uber and Lyft carry up to $1 million in coverage for these situations. Peretz Law Firm confirms which policy applies and handles the claim for you.

Do I report an Uber or Lyft crash in the app or to police?+

You should do both after an Uber or Lyft crash: call 911 so there's a police report, and report the crash inside the Uber or Lyft app to create a record with the company. Doing both preserves the two records your claim will rely on. Then talk to a lawyer before speaking with any insurance adjuster.
